We have put together a collection of links that we feel will be useful and interesting to Our Families members, and other Family History researchers. Many are sites we personally refer to regularly. Their quality varies as you would expect from any wide-ranging selection and we offer no guarantees for their content.
The Links are tested as often as we reasonably can - but sites do change their address or disappear. If you find a broken link, please let us know by clicking on the technical support link at the bottom of the page.
|Ancestry||Genealogy and Family History Records: Complete UK Census data 1841 to 1911 and BMD Index 1837 to 2005 plus a huge range of other databases.|
|FreeBMD||As the name suggests, a totally free site. Very useful for looking up UK birth, marriage and death certificate index references for the years between 1837 and about 1940. Not yet complete, but getting close.|
|National Archives - Documents online||Documents Online allows you access to The National Archives' collection of digitised public records, including both academic and family history sources. Searching the index is free, and costs £3.50 to download an image. Has valuable WW1 medal records.|
|Gedcom Standard 5.5.1||The definitive description of the GEDCOM file format currently in use.|
|Family Search - Record search||This is the International Genealogical Index, provided free to all by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). We find this the most useful of a range of databases available from the LDS, but they can all be accessed from this point.|
|Commonwealth War Graves Commission||This is the Commission's database listing the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died during the two world wars and the 23,000 cemeteries, memorials and other locations worldwide where they are commemorated.|
|The Workhouse||This site is dedicated to the workhouse: its buildings, inmates, staff and administrators, even its poets...|
|Deceased Online||Deceased Online is the first central database of statutory burial and cremation registers for the UK and Republic of Ireland, a unique resource for family history researchers and professional genealogists.|
|British Home Children Descendants||This is a site dedicated to the Descendants of British Home Children (BHC). It is an extension of the British Home Children Mailing List, hosted by Rootsweb. During the Child Emigration Scheme (called now British Home Children), between 1869 and the early 1930s, over 100,000 children were sent to Canada alone from Great Britain.|
|GEDCOM tags||The GEDCOM specification uses a range of "tag"s to define facts and events. This site lists all the standard ones, plus the many non-standard ones used by various software products.|
|UK Marriage Locator||This website enables you to interpret the Marriage Index created by the General Register Office for England and Wales. By using it you can determine where your ancestors were married, not just which Registration District, but which church!|
|Family Search - UK maps||A great range of maps showing parishes, registration districts, counties and lots more, all in historical contexts.|
|Family Search - Historical Record Collections||The complete searchable list of all the collections Family Search has available.|
